Environmental Protection: Federal Incentives Could Help Promote Land Use That Protects Air and Water Quality

Abstract

This report discusses the extent to which possible environmental effects from land use and development patterns (including patterns commonly known as urban sprawl) are taken into account in transportation, air quality protection, and water quality protection efforts. This report contains recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation and the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The recommendations address ways that the agencies can provide states and localities with financial incentives and technical support, among other things, to help them give greater consideration to the environmental impacts of their land use decisions.
