Gene Transfer Studies of the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

Abstract

The overall aim of this research is to use a recombinant multiply deleted genomic herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) based gene transfer vector to test the hypothesis that gene transfer of the glial derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) or bcl-2 can slow or prevent the apoptotic death of nigral neurons in animal models of PD, and that expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) can improve symptoms.
