Hedgerow and Fencerow Management on Corps of Engineers Projects

Abstract

The objective of this work unit is to provide technology on managing wildlife species and their habitats using ecosystem-based strategies. The emphasis is on methods that improve natural resources for a variety of species rather than single species. This note provides an overview of the characteristics of hedgerows and fencerows that allow them to function as wildlife habitats. It describes structural design, establishment, and management, as well as possible negative impacts caused by their use. Emphasis is placed on using native plant species rather than nonnative species to provide wildlife benefits on Corps lands.
