The Stanford University US-Japan Technology Management Center
Abstract
This grant established the U.S.-Japan Technology Management Center, Stanford University School of Engineering, as an ongoing center of excellence for the study of emerging trends and interrelationships between technology R&D and industry strategies in Japan. Our research, university education, and public outreach programs during and after the grant term focused on defense-relevant technologies, such as optoelectronics, advanced computing and networking, nanotechnologies, MEMS, system-level chip integration, and advanced manufacturing. Our technology management focus embraced industry standards and standardization, intellectual property management, U.S.-Japan joint ventures, Japanese science and technology policy, and university-industry relations. Several thousand U.S. technology managers, researchers, and company executives participated in our public programs. These included employees of U.S. national labs, military, and other U.S. government personnel, as well as key persons from major defense contractors and the Silicon Valley high-tech community. Our new Internet websites, including Japan Window and our ongoing J Guide Internet directory of Japan information, reached an estimated 137,000 unique individual users. In addition, our success in obtaining outyear funding to continue our programs so far is an indication of: (a) our success in meeting the goals of the grant and (b) the validity and value of the JITMT goals for its U.S. target audiences.
