Urban Encroachment of Military Lands: Military Installations at Risk

Abstract

Extreme urban growth and the resultant patterns of development are undermining the military community's ability to maintain mission focus. This paper defines the problem of urban encroachment on military lands and outlines some possible approaches to finding and developing solutions. Among the strategies suggested are more and continued community/installation dialogue, simulation modeling to ascertain future scenarios and possible environmental and planning impacts, and methodologies for the development of regionally based sustainable indices to encourage sustainable and well coordinated planning solutions.
