The Role of the Army National Guard in Homeland Defense

Abstract

Since its beginning over 360 years ago, the role of the Army National Guard has been a dual one. This duality manifests itself in state and federal functions. These dual functions should not impede the Guard's ability to play a significant role in homeland defense. Because of the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, the role of the Army National Guard in homeland defense should be fully explored. This study examines the threats to the homeland and the role the Army National Guard in protecting the nation from these threats.
