Logistics Transformation

Abstract

The United States Army is undergoing one of its most comprehensive transformations in history. Key to this transformation is a comprehensive logistics transformation. Joint Vision 2020 calls for a reduction in logistics mass, with an emphasis on focused logistics. To support focused logistics, reducing the logistics footprint in theater, the logistics transformation process must include: maximizing the use of all available means of transportation, maximizing the use of information systems, and maximizing joint and combined operations. Recommendations in these areas include: manifesting less supplies and equipment by air and more by rail, sea and truck; forming a task force to explore standardizing logistics systems throughout the services; conducting more joint and combined exercises; and revising logistics training by combining it with other services and emphasizing joint operations. This logistics transformation process will take a dedicated effort by all Army logisticians working in harmony with their sister service counterparts, in order to be truly successful.
