African American Sailors: Their Role in Helping the Union to Win the Civil War

Abstract

The Union Navy played a decisive role in allowing the United States to achieve its strategic objective of preserving the Union; this goal would not have been realized without the manpower and contributions of African American sailors who served during the Civil War.
