Paratroopers and Their Future in Germany

Abstract

This study traces the development of German paratroopers from the beginning of the second World War to the current day. The first third deals with specific operations that were undertaken by National Socialists in which paratroopers seemed to play a pivotal role. The significance of paratroopers after WWII, given the strict limitations on German military expenditures, is then discussed, especially in light of the involvement of German armed forces in U.S.-organized deployments during the Cold War period. A general survey of personnel, tasks, possible deployment tactics, and structure of this division is also included. The author also discusses whether helicopters or planes are the more effective means of paratrooper transport.
