Product Line Production Planning for the Home Integration System Example

Abstract

A production plan is a description of how a software product line organization builds products in a product line. This technical note examines the significant characteristics of the production plans of three hypothetical organizations that create product lines of home integration systems. Such systems enable homeowners to access and control equipment in their homes such as climate control and security systems. The plan for one of the organizations is presented in some detail, and the plans for the other two are described in terms of their differences from the first plan. The purpose of this note is to show how influences such as an organization's business goals, production strategy, and experience in product lines can lead to very different approaches to building products.
