Abstract

Most of the data is culled from the author's tenure in the military leadership from 1987 to 1995, during which time he witness the reforms spurred by the end of the Cold War and German Reunification. The study is then divided in the following manner: firstly, the armed forces as a system of general ordering principles; secondly, the armed forces' relationship to ecological trends; thirdly, the basic principles of military reforms, including how, how much, why, and to what end; fourthly, the recent history of reform motivation in Germany; reform planning and effectuation; and finally, selected methodological aspects related to military reform.
