DestabilisierendeFaktoren im Raum Nah-Mittel-Ost unter besonderer Beruecksichtigung der Proliferation (Destablishing Factors in the Near and Middle East with Special Regard to the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction)

Abstract

The author first mentions some of the risk factors in the Near East: the Israel problem, the violent aspects of Islam, the water shortage, the economic dependence on oil, the unanswered questions of succession, the regional demands, and the missing security "architecture". He then talks about conventional armament and disarmament, and why the Near East provides an exception to these conventions. The proliferation of ABC (atomic, biological and chemical)-weapons and long range missiles he deems particularly alarming. In conclusion, he sketches out the future perspectives for the region and suggests some possible solutions to the array of dilemmas which Near East leaders ultimately will have to confront.
