Influences of Nutrition and Physical Forces on bone Structure/Function Properties

Abstract

Approved for Public Release; Distribution Unlimited 13, ABSTRACT (Maximum 200 Words) The purpose of this research program is to contribute towards two major objectives in support of advancing our ability to prevent or treat bone failure or fragility: 1. Developing and characterizing methods of evaluating bone properties in animal models that goes beyond measures of bone density and global mechanical properties. 2. Evaluating the influence of physical forces and nutritional status on bone biomechanical integrity. Specifically, it was the purpose of this study to apply a hierarchical approach to quantifying the properties of murine bone to the level of the extracellular matrix. Furthermore, the study was designed to test hypotheses concerning the interplay between vitamin D and calcium nutritional support and physical forces. Progress during the first year of study has followed the proposed statement of work. All of the mechanical fixtures have been fabricated and calibrated. This included a custom designed and fabricated treadmill system for exercising the animals, as well as whole bone and microspecimen mechanical testing fixtures. The first cohorts of animals have been entered into the study as scheduled and the bones from the first group of animals are beginning to be characterized. Finally, a database structure has been created and scheduled for continuing cohorts of animals prescribed. 14. SUBJECT TERMS 15. NUMBER OF PAGES
