New Graduate BME Curriculum at the University of Technology BRNO

Abstract

The study of biomedical engineering began at the University of Technology in Brno, Czechoslovakia, in 1967, but it wasn't until the political changes of 1980 that the scope of the department really broadened. At that time the department's name was changed from the Department of Medical Electronics to the Department of Medical Engineering and students' course of study included electronics and communication, control and measurement, and computer science. The goal of the department was to produce graduates who were still engineers, but who had specialized knowledge capable of allowing them to work in a hospital, a biomedical research facility, or in the design and production of biomedical equipment. In the last year two more major changes occurred in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. First, the Faculty was split into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication and the Faculty of Information Technology. Second, the 5-year program was subdivided into a bachelor's degree stage and a master's degree stage. This paper describes the specific courses required for the 3-year bachelor's and 2-year master's degree programs. A unique feature of the master's degree program is education in the basics of ecological engineering.
