Regulation to I Transport in Breast Cancer Cell Lines
Abstract
Like thyroid tissue, lactating breast actively accumulates iodide via the Na+/I- symporter (NIS). Iodide is thus supplied to the nursing newborn in the milk. Iodide transport via NIS has been used successfully for over 60 years to treat thyroid cancer by administration of radioiodide. We have shown that over 80% of human breast cancers express NIS, raising the possibility that radioiodide may be used for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The aim of this project was to analyze the distinct regulatory mechanisms exerted on mammary gland NIS'S in mammary cell lines in vitro. In the last year we demonstrated mgNIS mRNA expression in three non-tumoral and six tumoral breast cell lines, and showed that the expression is sensitive to hormonal treatments.
