Prescribed Burn at Pine Bluff Arsenal

Abstract

Fire is an important ecological process in the southern United States. Many animal and plant species evolved in the presence of fire, and many vegetation types thrive best in the presence of fire. Fire-dependent biota are declining, because of fire suppression and landscape changes. Pine Bluff Arsenal has been working to restore pine savanna, a declining habitat, by reintroducing prescribed burns on part of the Arsenal. The report contains information on fire ecology, history and prescribed fire at Pine Bluff Arsenal. Fire effects monitoring reports, and a report of the initial field study of herpetological diversity and abundance in relation to fire management, are included.
