Underwater Remote Sensing and Terrestrial Survey Pensacola Bay and Deadman's Island, Santa Rosa County, Florida

Abstract

In August 2002, archaeologists from Panamerican Consultants, Inc. conducted a cultural resources investigation on and surrounding a portion of Deadman's Island in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Project plans call for the construction of a wall of vinyl sheetpile offshore of the island and the planting of vegetation on the island itself to combat the effects of erosion and stabilize the island. A remote-sensing survey found 17 magnetic anomalies within the project boundaries. Four of the anomalies are located directly in line with the proposed sheetpile placement route and require investigation to assess their identity and historical significance relative to NRHP eligibility criteria to adverse construction impacts. The other 13 anomalies are seaward and shoreward of the proposed pile placement area. These anomaly sources should be avoided during pile placement activities. Terrestrial investigations did not encounter any significant cultural material.
