Breaking the Chains of Command: C4I in the Information Age

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to assess the chain of command in the information age in an effort to identify unintended effects of information technology. In addition, this paper advances recommendations to digitally enhance and strengthen the chain of command. Revolutionary changes to the way a military operates should, in all cases, be deliberate in nature because changes to fundamental military concepts will often times necessitate changes across the entire spectrum of military operations. Although information technology has only been with the uniformed services for a short time, its effects have been significant, and at times disconcerting.
