AACN National Board: Passionate and Proactive

Abstract

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) National Board is composed of stellar and diverse nurse leaders whose goal is to promote safe critical care nursing and healthy practice environments. The author reports on her attendance at the AACN April 2003 board meeting in Denver, Colorado. As a Board Learning Partner, she felt fortunate to actively participate in the board meeting and observe board members and National Office staff at work. She saw firsthand that board members are proactive and passionate about their roles as AACN leaders. For 3 days the author and other Board Learning Partners submerged themselves in meetings and social events to truly understand what it takes to do the work of AACN. The social connection among the board members plays a vitally important role in the governance of AACN. Knowing each other as well as they do provides board members with the opportunity not only to respect each other, but also to hear each voice, achieve consensus, and foster AACN's mission, vision, and values.
