Abstract

The Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity annual Report 2001 summarizes work done to support the development of evidence-based medical accession standards contained in DoD Instruction 6130.4 "Criteria and Procedure Requirements for Physical Standards for Appointment, Enlistment, or Induction in the Armed Forces." Studies in this report include: 1. Retention of Mild Asthmatics in the Navy, 2. Early Attrition Caused by Asthma in 2001 at FT Jackson, 3. Early Hospitalizations for Injury and Subsequent Attrition, 4. Case Series Review of Recruits Discharged for Inguinal Hernia, Hepatitis, Temporomandibular Disorders, Thyroid Disorders, Diabetes Mellitus, Abnormal Pap Smear, Enuresis, and Varicocele. Over 1,575,000 enlisted military applicants and 850,000 military accessions were analyzed. Applicants and accessions from 1995 to 1999 (aggregate) were compared to 2000 with attention to medical disqualifications, medical waiver hospitalizations, existed prior to service medical discharges, and disability discharges. Future deliverable research efforts described include: mental health hospitalization and impact on attrition, detection of young adults with major psychiatric disorders, and the retention of mild asthmatics in the Navy.
