Abstract

This report contains the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Retinal Proteins, which was held at the University of Seattle, WA, on 20-24 August 2002. The report contains the conference program, a list of the participants, abstracts of the 60 lectures presented at the conference, and abstracts of the 124 poster sessions that were held during the conference. Session I, Regulation of the Chromophore's Absorption Spectrum in Retinal Proteins, was chaired by Daniel Oprian and David Hunt; Session II, Photocycle and Proton Movements in Bacteriorhodopsin, was chaired by Pal Ormos and Hemi Gutman; Session III, Primary Photochemical Events in Retinal Pigments, was chaired by Johan Lugtenburg; Session IV, Origin, Evolution and Diversity of Visual Pigments, was chaired by Tom Ebrey; Session V, Structure of Halobacterial Retinal Proteins and their Photointermediates, was chaired by Tsutomu Kouyama and Robert Glaeser; Session VI, Photoactive Yellow Protein (PYP), was chaired by Roberto Bogomolni; Session VII, Rhodopsin Structure, was chaired by Ron Stenkamp and Ehud Landau; Session VIII, Retinal Processing for Visual Pigment Regeneration, was chaired by Jack Saari; Session IX, Vibrational Spectroscopy of Retinal Proteins I, was chaired by Akio Maeda; Session X, Vibrational Spectroscopy of Retinal Proteins II, was chaired by Andrei K. Dioumaev; Session XI, Microbial Rhodopsins: Diversity and Mechanisms, was chaired by John Spudich and Naoki Kamo; and the final session, Session XII, Activation by Rhodopsin, was chaired by Jim Hurley and Nadik Abdulaev.
