Low Airspeed Measuring Devices for Helicopter Usage Monitoring

Abstract

Low airspeed measurement is problematic on helicopters due to adverse flow fields from the rotors impinging on the standard pitot static system. A variety of alternative methods exist to measure airspeed. This note presents a brief review of some of the low airspeed measuring devices available for aircraft and, more particularly, helicopters. This note also introduces a novel technique that was studied within Air Vehicles Division as a concept demonstrator.
