Third US-Japan Workshop on Advanced Research on Earthquake Engineering for Dams, San Diego, California, 22-23 June 2002

Abstract

This report summarizes a workshop organized by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, and the Public Works Research Institute of Japan (PWRI) under the auspices of the Task Committee on Dams of the Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects, part of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources. The workshop was held in San Diego, CA, 22-23 June 2002, as part of the preconference activities of the 22nd U.S. Society on Dams Annual Meeting and Conference held at the same location 24-28 June 2002. The Workshop provided a valuable forum for the exchange of technical information related to seismic evaluation criteria for dams, numerical techniques for seismic analysis, seismic design and evaluation of appurtenant structures, instrumentation, condition assessment, seismic upgrade and rehabilitation, foundation problems, case studies, as well as many other general topics of interest. The workshop was attended by 64 U.S. participants, 10 Japanese participants, and 16 participants from other countries (Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Republic of Panama, and Spain).
