1ST Air Force Workshop on Multifunctional Aerospace Materials

Abstract

The "Microstructure Testing and Analysis Laboratory" is a new facility for the mechanical testing of small specimens, soft material, and small structures. The main components of the laboratory are a low force electrodynamically actuated test frame for axial/torsion and combined loading, a digital image correlation system for the measurement of displacement fields, and a stereovision system for investigations of fracture surface. The facilities have been used successfully in research projects on carbon-carbon composites, and in investigations of porous polymeric materials, as well as for projects in a graduate course on "Micromechanics of Materials." In all experiments performed so far the experimental facilities have performed in a satisfactory manner.
