Neutral Density Structures in the High Latitude Thermosphere

Abstract

The proposed work will involve the use of a global 3-D first-principles model of the upper atmosphere called the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIMEGCM). The main data sources will be FUV images from the Dynamics Explorer-I (DE-1) satellite, together with in-situ data from the DE-2 satellite. The main focus of this proposal is to investigate whether high latitude neutral density cells can be detected by the advanced ultraviolet remote sensing experiments to be flown on DoD satellites in the near future, such as the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI).
