An Assessment of Performance and Condition Monitoring Requirements of Foreign Marine Diesel Propulsion Systems

Abstract

This report presents a synopsis of the requirements and recommended practices for diesel engine diagnostic, performance and condition monitoring systems for medium and slow speed diesel propulsion systems. The basis for the requirements, practices and recommendations presented is an extensive survey of foreign (European and Japanese) classification societies, diesel engine manufacturers, electronics systems manufacturers, and ship owners/operators. Included in the report are tabulated machinery parameters which are sensed for performance and condition monitoring purposes. The report concludes with recommendations for the application of performance and condition monitoring systems which can be used as a design guide by U.S. Flag owner/operators.
