RFC Validation - Statistical On-Time Comparison With In-Situ Methods

Abstract

The ability to extract a refractivity profile from in-situ data is a valuable capability for today's radar systems. To date, most investigations have centered upon the use of ancillary sensors to accomplish this task, with varying degrees of success. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the performance of an approach that does not require any ancillary sensors. The results show that under certain conditions, this approach yields results comparable to those obtained from in-situ data collected via rocketsonde, but in its current form, it cannot yet compete with helicopter-derived profiles.
