BW Threat & Vulnerability

Abstract

These briefing charts address the Biological Warfare (BW) threat and U.S. vulnerability to that threat. The charts cover BW exploitation, area coverage, threat agents and delivery systems, differences between BW and Chemical Warfare (CW), and countermeasures. Information also is provided on the Iraqi BW and Weapons of Mass Destruction threat; the types of bacteria, toxins, and viruses that make up the BW threat; delivery systems, including spray tanks, cruise missiles, agricultural sprayers, and missile warheads with bomblets; favorable attack conditions in terms of wind speed and direction; and the area coverage, quantity, cost, onset time, form, targets, and U.S. preparedness for chemical versus biological agents. In summary, there are compelling reasons for the enemy to use BW, Iraq has a large weaponized stockpile, delivery systems range from the simple to the sophisticated, BW can cause massive casualties over large areas, BW is completely different from CW, and successful biodetection is the strongest link in the biodefense chain.
