Mission Level Mobility Analysis of the U.S. Marine Corps HIMARS Vehicles

Abstract

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, conducted a vehicle mobility analysis for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) to identify the different mission profiles the prime transporters (the USMC Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) and the MK48-14 Logistics Vehicle System (LVS)) may encounter during worldwide deployment. The proposed mission profile evaluation program focused on using computer-based digital terrain and vehicle mobility models to determine the different terrain types the vehicle may encounter while deployed on missions in three representative climatic regions. The predicted mission profiles for the MTVR and LVS, with and without a M1095 trailer, were quantified to determine their relationship to standard mission profile descriptions. The TeleEngineering Toolkit was used to graphically plan and locate the potential HIMARS mission scenarios in the three regions. The NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) was used to predict the mobility performance of the MTVR and LVS over these regions. The Route Analysis Routine was used to determine the fastest routes to the different storage areas based on the selected corridors of operation and on the NRMM vehicle mobility performance predictions. The Mission Severity Rating algorithms were used to quantify the different mission segments for comparison to standard mission levels and to determine the appropriate mission level for the study vehicles for each climatic region. These climatic re ion conclusions were combined to develop a worldwide mission profile for each vehicle configured with and without a trailer.
