Keeping the Strategic Flame

Abstract

I would like to pursue three sets of questions about this paucity of strategic thinking: * What is strategic thinking? How can it be distinguished from other kinds of military thought? * What happened to strategic thinking? What caused its flame to wax and now wane? * Why should we mourn the absence of strategic thinking today? What will it take to rekindle the flame? I will argue that the strategic flame must be rekindled and kept alive. It has gone out twice before in this century to the Nation's detriment.
