Abstract

The Inventory of Government-Supported Research Projects on Foreign Affairs is prepared annually for the Under Secretaries Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs Research (USC/FAR). The subcommittee was established in 1971 pursuant to a Presidential directive that the USC assume responsibility for assuring interagency coordination of external research on foreign affairs supported by various departments and agencies of the executive branch. The Department of State's Office of External Research (XR) provides the secretariat for the subcommittee. External research activities of concern to the USC/FAR are those involving application or advancement of the social sciences and humanities as these bear substantively on foreign areas and international relations.
