Inventory of Government-Supported Research Projects on Foreign Affairs. Volume 4. Near East, South Asia and Africa

Abstract

The Inventory of Government-Supported Research Projects on Foreign Affairs is prepared annually for the Under Secretaries Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs Research (USC/FAR). The subcommittee was established in 1971 pursuant to a Presidential directive that the USC assume responsibility for assuring interagency coordination of external research on foreign affairs supported by various departments and agencies of the executive branch. The Department of State's Office of External Research (XR) provides the secretariat for the subcommittee. The chart on page v depicts the various elements in the current USC/FAR system. External research activities of concern to the USC/FAR are those involving application or advancement of the social sciences and humanities as these bear substantively on foreign areas and international relations. The unclassified inventory consists of five volumes: I. American Republics; II. East Asia; III. Europe; IV. Near East, South Asia, and Africa; and V. International Relations.
