China - The Threat to the United States and Asia

Abstract

China is emerging as East Asia's regional hegemon. Growing economic, technological, and military power enables it to increase its influence over other nations in the region and the world. Determining if China will emerge as a friendly nation or as a military and economic threat is difficult to predict. The strategy the United States should use to implement its diplomatic, informational, economic, and military power to ensure that China is a friendly nation in the future is difficult to determine in a volatile and uncertain environment. This paper discusses the regional situation and China's future, and explores strategic policy alternatives to enable the United States to counter potential future threats. (21 refs.)
