Aircraft
Abstract
The capabilities of the United States aircraft industry make it one of the essential foundations of the economic, political, and military elements of U.S. national power. Nevertheless, the events of 2001 significantly diminished the industry's vitality. Still leading U.S. business in export dollars, the industry has been forced to look for new markets as worldwide aircraft sales have dropped. Because the U.S. national security depends so heavily on this industry, the U.S. government provided support to weakened sectors - notably, the commercial air transport sector - that helped forestall a grave diminution of capability. As the U.S. economy emerges from the 2001 recession, so, too, will the aircraft industry begin to recover. In the meantime, the European aircraft market has experienced similar setbacks, but recent aircraft orders have restored vigor to their commercial transport sales. U.S. and European aircraft manufacturers continue to vie for market dominance, but only persist ill maintaining relative parity, even as they find increasing collaborations to be ill the interests of both. Given these circumstances, and without cooperative strategic planning by public and private organizations, the aircraft industry faces an uncertain future.
