Low Vision Research at the Schepens Eye Research Institute

Abstract

This proposal entitled, "Low Vision Research at The Schepens Eye Research Institute," is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary effort by four investigators working on four different studies. Project 1 focuses on determining effective ways to suppress corneal cell death resulting from inflammation, immune responses, and trauma. Project 2 focuses on identifying factors that can predict dry eye complications of LASIK surgery. Project 3 focuses on developing bioengineering methods using cultured human corneal endothelial cells (HCEC) . Project 4 continues with the remote diagnosis of retinal damage, which has progressed in the analysis, design and implementation of the optics train, the embedded image acquisition system, and the laser interlock system of the LSDC. All of these studies involve critical and under-investigated research areas with military relevance relating to the health and vision of the armed forces.
