Virtual Prototyping System
Abstract
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defense equipment cannot be tested or evaluated in conditions closely approaching an operational employment. Although not replacing actual testing, computer simulation can overcome most CBRN safety and environmental testing concerns, allowing system evaluation in an operational contest. Functioning as either a stand-alone or distributed process, the Virtual Prototyping System (VPS) addresses the importance of assessing CBRN defense systems and concepts in realistic conditions and satisfies the need for compliance with Simulation Based Acquisition guidance. The VPS is a Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tool designed to define and evaluate CBRN defense equipment throughout all phases of the acquisition life-cycle. The goal of VPS is to represent the CBRN defense system functionality with appropriate fidelity for the particular analysis or assessment. The system evaluation includes the interactive and interdependent relations between the systems, components, and subsystems. VPS supports functional assessments to include requirements generation, system engineering, and operational worth evaluation. The leveraging of existing DoD M&S capabilities for CBRN defense system analysis is fundamental to the VPS concept. By using existing community M&S resources (e.g., libraries, models, and simulations), significant economy of cost and time is realized in VPS development and implementation.
