Information Theoretic Studies of Image Formation Detection and Processing
Abstract
The attached document is the final report for AFOSR grant no. F49620-01-1-0321. The originally proposed tasks were addressed more or less completely in the course of the funded work. The following research milestones were reached: 1) The statistical information content of prior knowledge in the form of support was assessed theoretically and via simulation of speckle interferometric imaging; 2) A comparison of blind deconvolution techniques using Shannon mutual information; 3) A Fisher information based study of phase-diversity speckle method, including the optimal choice and strength of diversity phase in the second channel; 4) A Fisher information based optimization of wavefront encoded imaging systems; 5) The use of successfully transmitted statistical information as a performance metric for stopping iterative image restoration algorithms like the Richardson-Lucy algorithm; 6) Clarification of the fundamental nature of Fisher information; and 7) A derivation of sum rules that connect information in the physical and Fourier domains.
