Quality Indicators for Quality of Care During Hospitalization for Vulnerable Elder Persons

Abstract

Admission to the hospital is a near certainty during the lifetime of vulnerable elders. A hospital stay can be associated with serious declines in health and function and utilization of significant health care resources. This paper aims to describe quality of care indicators for vulnerable elders who are hospitalized. While many of the above conditions, such as congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers, and ischemic heart disease, contain indicators for the quality of hospital care associated with that condition, this paper focuses on general or inter-condition indicators of hospital quality of care.
