North Korea in the 1990s: Implications for the Future of the U.S.-South Korea Security Alliance

Abstract

This Note assesses the implications of change for North Korea, the U.S.South Korean security alliance, and the stability of Northeast Asia. It also explores the relationship between the U.S. military presence in South Korea and the evolution of new policies in North Korea. It was produced as part of an exploratory project, "Future Trends in North Korea," undertaken within the Strategy and Doctrine program of RAND's Arroyo Center. The Note should be of interest to policy planners who are considering the implications of future directions for North Korea and U.S. regional security strategy.
