Analytical Chemistry Detection Limits and the Evaluation of Dredged Sediments

Abstract

This technical note presents information clarifying the proper use of analytical chemistry detection limit terminology with respect to the evaluation of dredged material prior to disposal in ocean or inland waters of the United States. This document is intended to support guidance presented in the Inland Testing Manual (USEPA/USACE 1998) and the Ocean Testing Manual (USEPA/USACE 1991). Valuable guidance regarding detection limit terminology can be found in Appendix I of EM-200-1-3 (USACE 2001) and Appendix D of the Department of Defense's (DoD's) Quality Systems Manual (USDoD 2002).
