Department of Defense Base Structure Report (A Summary of DoD's Real Property Inventory). Fiscal Year 2003 Baseline

Abstract

Since 1999, the Department of Defense has used its real property inventory as the basis for the annual publication of the Base Structure Report. This report contains a comprehensive listing of installations and sites used by the Department, summarizes the current facilities inventory, and provides other basic information concerning the locations. The Department's physical plant is huge by any standard, consisting of more than 600,000 individual buildings and structures, at more than 6,000 locations, on more than 30 million acres. Sites range from small, unoccupied locations supporting a single navigational aid on less than one-half acre, to the Navy's complex of installations at Norfolk, VA, with more than 71,000 employees, and to the Army's White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, that includes over 3.6 million acres. Capturing this large set of assets in a single, manageable document requires some summarization. This year we have added summary matrices of installation size where installation size is measured by the Plant Replacement Value (PRV) of the facilities at a particular location.
