Naval War College Style Manual and Classification Guide

Abstract

This Style Manual and Classification Guide provides writers with information on development of papers or reports resulting from research or analytical efforts. It describes format and documentation and gives examples for the preparation of written documents. Especially useful are the sections devoted to specific forms for footnote and bibliographic entries, pages 13 to 32. Formats included in those pages are generally consistent with the "Turabian" system of citation. While several methods of citation are in general use today, Turabian provides a recognized standard system that is easy to use and universally understood. The examples in this publication will suffice for virtually all of the types of citations writers will need. In the rare instance that situations not covered here are encountered, multiple copies of Turabian are available in the Library. This manual is complemented directly by the Naval War College Writing Guide, and by the Naval War College Library and its staff. The Writing Guide offers guidance and suggestions for conducting research and composing papers to satisfy curriculum requirements.
