Promoting Stability and Security in Venezuela

Abstract

It is in the national interest of the United States to effectively promote liberty, freedom, and democracy within the world and especially in its own region: the Americas. Venezuela is a democratic country in this region that is facing a critical period of political instability with serious impacts on its economy and security and the rest of the region. The purpose of this paper is to describe the situation in Venezuela, explain and analyze the current U.S. policy toward this country, and make broad recommendations for a path forward to ensure that the United States is effectively and efficiently using all its elements of national power to promote political stability and security in Venezuela.
