The Sensitivities of Yeast Strains Deficient in PDR ABC Transporters to Quinoline-Ring Antimalarial Drugs
Abstract
Data indicate a potential role for the Pdr5p P-glycoprotein ATP-binding-cassette (ABC) transporter in mediating chloroquine sensitivity in S. cervisae. This is consistent with the hypothesis that such a transporter plays a role in mediating quinoline-drug resistance in P. falciparum, and complements the results of previous studies on the parasite. Additional gene products also play a major role in mediating chloroquine sensitivity and resistance, apparently through the modulation of vacuolar pH in the parasite.
