Unique Approaches to Androgen Effects on Prostate Cancer

Abstract

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBC) is a plasma protein that binds androgens. It also is a transducer of androgen signaling at the plasma membrane of prostate cancer cells. We have found that the human prostate cancer cell line, LNCaP, in addition to having a receptor for SHBG (RsHBG), produces its own SHBG. We hvpothesize that local regulation of SHBG production and/or secretion results in important autocrine and paracrine effects that influence gene expression and growth in prostate cancer cells.
