Report on Astronomical Constants

Abstract

This paper reviews recent progress in the determinations of astronomical constants. By collecting the results on scale constants and precession, the author updates the former International Astronomical Union (IAU) File of Current Best Estimates (of astronomical constants) (Standish, 1995). The revised list is illustrated in Table 3. Here, the references for the items that differ from the previous version are as follows: (1) Tholen and Buie (1997) for the mass ratio of Pluto+Charon to that of the Sun, M(sub S)/M(sub P); (2) DE405 (Standish, 1998) for tau(sub A) and M(sub M)/M(sub E); (3) IAG 1999 (Groten, 1999) for the geodetic constants alpha(sub E), J(sub 2), GM(sub E), 1/f, and W(sub 0); (4) CODATA 1998 (Mohr and Taylor, 1999) for G; and (5) this article for L(sub G), L(sub C), p, and epsilon(sub 0).
