Blood Volume and Other Hematologic Values in Young Elephant Seals (Mirounga angustirostris)

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the blood volume in the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) by a method that could be accurate to 2 percent. The blood volumes of 7 young northern elephant seals were analyzed using a dilution of radioactive iodinated human serum albumin. Microhematocrit values also were determined. Using these techniques, a mean blood volume of 216 ml/kg and a mean packed cell volume of 64% were determined for these deep diving mammals.
