The Uncertainty Principle and Operational Art

Abstract

This report addresses the role of uncertainty at the operational level of combat. Specifically, it addresses the question of whether uncertainty should affect planning at the operational level; and, if so, how. Three major battles are analyzed to determine whether uncertainty was present, and, when discovered, to discuss its consequences. The principles of war currently espoused by the U.S. Army are discussed in relations to uncertainty and recommendations are offered regarding the planning for uncertainty in future operations.
