An Independent Palestinian State. The Fundamental Ingredient for An Arab-Israeli Peace

Abstract

Over the past several months, the United States has attempted to orchestrate a series of meetings between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Diplomats hope that these talks will eventually lead to a settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Not surprisingly, this latest effort is proving to be a long and arduous task. However, despite the best intentions of the United States, this attempt to foster a dialogue between the warring parties will not, by Itself, produce the desired result - a comprehensive peace between the Arab nations and Israel. A successful effort will require much more from the United States. A report from The Brookings Institute says that "bold new initiatives" are needed, initiatives that involve a "wedding of American power to the purposes of the diplomacy of peace."3 It could be right.
