TIAPS "Through the Sensor Probing" Technique

Abstract

An earlier contract (Calnan 2004) resulted in the creation of BREVER, a program able to perform reverberation inversion on processed ping data from TIAPS sea trials. The inversion results, which are the geoacoustical properties of the pings' environments, could be used to calculate transmission losses in these environments. This contract was let to perform inversions on a number of pings, calculate transmission losses, and compare the results to those obtained from other means. This contract was also intended to permit enhancement of the reverberation program and assist the Scientific Authority in the preparation of a conference presentation and paper. As it happened the processed pings did not become available during the course of the contract, thus preventing the inversion and transmission loss comparisons. However the other work was performed, and a number of other tasks related to BREVER and its analysis engine, SWAMI, were performed. These included verifying the consistency and accuracy of inversion results, enhancing the operation of BREVER, and performing some initial work to SWAMI that would allow the use of the program Bellhop, which produces eigenray-based environments, to replace the normal mode program PMODES.
